SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS:

ENSURE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE, SUSTAINABLE, AND MODERN ENERGY FOR ALL

The way we use energy matters. Today, let's talk about the seventh goal!

As we are familiar, energy is defined as the capacity of doing work or the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. However, some people are still clueless about affordable energy.

To begin, when we talk about affordable energy, we mean ensuring that everyone on the planet has access to adequate energy services regardless of their status and where being. The less developed a country is, the less energy it can afford. As a result, if every government strives to develop and strengthen the country's energy access for all individuals, it can aid in improving the country's economy and eradicating poverty.

For many decades, fossil fuels such as coal, oil, or gas have been major sources of electricity production. According to United Nations, 2.4 billion people still use inefficient and polluting cooking systems, and 733 million people living without electricity in 2020.

However, burning carbon fuels produces large amounts of greenhouse gases which cause climate change and have harmful impacts on people’s well-being and the environment. Energy production and consumption cause a lot of different pollution such as:
  • Air pollution
  • Water pollution
  • Climate change
  • Global warming
  • Thermal pollution
  • Solid waste disposal

That is why, we as a manpower need to improve energy efficiency as it helps in sustaining the world.
Some of the efforts and adheres the government can do are:
  • Reduce agricultural waste
  • Invest in energy-efficient power generation
  • Make greener cities with energy-efficient buildings
  • Build a safe and affordable public transport system
  • Cooperate with different countries in energy efficiency research
  • Provide universal access to affordable fuels and technologies for cooking, heating, and lighting

Here are some of its targets:
7.1. By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services.

7.2. By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

7.3. By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.

7.a. By 2030, enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology.

7.b. By 2030, expand infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all in developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States, and land-locked developing countries, in accordance with their respective programmes of support.
