SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS:

ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS

Today, I'm going to share about the fifth goal of SDG. Let's get to it!

According to Cambridge Dictionary, gender equality is the act of treating women and men equally, or simply we can say that all individuals receive the same opportunities for privilege and rights regardless of their gender. That means everyone must be treated with dignity and respect in all aspects of their lives.

The historical status of women has given rise to the fight for gender equality concerning women having the same rights as men.

According to United Nations, it would take another 40 years for women and men to be presented equally in national political leadership at the current pace. Up until 2022, women only got 26.2% shares in national parliaments.

The following are some of the other causes of the fights:
  • Women earn less money (salary) than men for the same job.
  • Stereotypes of women as mothers and caretakers and not as leaders.
  • More than 750 million girls get married before they reach adulthood.
  • Women make up two-thirds of the world’s illiterate people (less access to education).
  • Violence against women continues to be portrayed as a family problem rather than a crime.
  • Women around the world are being treated with less dignity precisely because they are women.
For these factors and many more, gender equality is a top priority as a sustainable development goal for the United Nations. Equality is not only a fundamental human right, but it's also one of the main ingredients in constructing a peaceful and sustainable society.

Here are some of its targets:

5.1 End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.

5.2 Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.

5.3 Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage, and female genital mutilation.

5.4 Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure, and social protection policies and the promotion of shared responsibility within the household and the family as nationally appropriate.

5.5 Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life.

Although much progress has been made women and girls around the world still do not have access to the same chance as men. To put an end to this issue, it's important for countries to change certain laws, rethink certain customs, and promote policies that will help in ending the injustice against every person in the world specifically, all women and girls.
