SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
END POVERTY IN ALL ITS FORMS EVERYWHERE

Before we learn more about this goal, I'd like to discuss poverty first.

Have you ever wondered what precisely poverty is?

According to Cambridge Dictionary, poverty is a condition of being extremely poor or a situation in which individuals are unable to achieve their fundamental necessities due to a lack of resources.

Poverty is defined not just by a lack of money, but also by a lack of access to basic needs such as food, clean water, shelter (home), and a simple medical checkup.

Based on all these factors, we can see that poverty extends beyond the lack of cash and resources; it also hinders people from having a dignified and joyful life. I believe until today, poverty is a common challenge, particularly in this developing world.

According to United Nations, more than 700 million peopleor 10% of the global population still live in extreme poverty, which means they are surviving on less than $1.90 a day.

Some circumstances, including war or natural disasters, also increase the number of people living in poverty.

Did you know that children and women make up the majority of the poor?

Millions of women worldwide face difficulties due to limited access to education and skilled labor. For youngsters, they suffer from lack of education and nutritional issues.

That is why the first worldwide sustainable development goal is to eradicate poverty and enhance the lives of millions of people.

To address this issue, the United Nations has suggested a number of social protection measures to assist the most vulnerable individuals through sustainable development goals.

Here are some of its targets:
1.1. By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day.

1.2. By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women, and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.

1.3. Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.

1.4. By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources.

1.5. By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social, and environmental shocks and disasters.

To address this predicament, we must all work together as a community so that we can guarantee equitable opportunities for all in terms of basic services like education, health care, and technology.
